Genuine question, every forum/car site says that you shouldn’t even poke it with a long stick (no ugly stick jokes pleeees), is it that bad? Or is it just a little less reliable than what one would expect from a BMW?

It is more reliable than a 2002 760Li.

That is the worst car BMW, and possibly Germany, has ever built. One of the few vehicles eclipsed in reliability by a decade old Range Rover. I’m not kidding, that’s my professional advice.

Why is it so bad?

Good Point.

All of the things. The engines are prone to valve guide wear and smoking before 100k, the PCV systems are in a constant state of failure due to high crankcase pressure from the valve guides, the cooling system is made of hopes and dreams, the transmissions routinely fail before 120k, that generation of I-drive is like the Kinja of automotive user interfaces, the electronics are maddening, the paint is terrible, the trim falls off and peels, water leaks into the cabin are an issue, the active suspension and steering are problematic (try this phrase on: “sway bar leak”. Sounds made up, right? Nope. ), they consume batteries with alarming speed, etc, etc. They are made to be thrown away by 80k. Absolute shit.

Great cars if you don’t mind and have the time to dedicate to the constant cascade of pin-prick problems you will experience. My neighbor had one and was working on it constantly.

That doesn’t sound real good.

So what if I find one with less than 50k miles? Would I have the little random issues or would the wear items also fail thanks to its age?

No.
Just no.
These have to be in the top 10 worst (and ugliest) cars to ever come out of Germany.

I actually quite like it, the interior not so much, but I love this 7 series.

Both. If mileage doesn’t get you atrophy will. There is no upside with these.

That’s the reason why most of them are cheap then.

Good thing because 85% of the time (on a good day) it’ll be nothing more than a driveway ornament.

Yes. Nothing depreciates like a German luxury flagship, and this is the poster child. The E38 is an immeasurably better car, and is commensurately worth more.

No bueno. I always did like the styling though.

What I figured, found some (2) low mileage ones and started dreaming as I often do. Really like the styling, but too unreliable, even for me.

Water cooled alternators.
Nope.

Oh yeah. BMW went there. Water and electricity, nothing could possibly go wrong there.
Well, more like nothing could make it a larger pain in the ass to replace.
